Hi FLSTF gal,
I rode from Atlanta to LA in 93' on my own, camping in State Parks each night. I did it in 5 days.
Easy, you might say, your Male!
But not so, as I come from a small, remote village in the Scottish Highlands & had never been to the US before, or ridden on the right (we drive/ride on the LEFT side of the road in the UK).
The bike was a 78' 650 Yam that I paid $500 for, the week before I left Atl!
I have been riding for 29 years now, but nothing really prepares you for such a trip, so all I can say is do your preparation throughly, keep your eyes open on the Freeway, when you stop to eat, park in front of the diner & sit by the window so you can watch your scoot while you dine, if you can't, move on to the next diner, there are plenty to choose from in the US!
Simple things like that & you will be fine! Wear leathers, regardless of how hot it gets, better to be sweaty & have all your hide than be fragrant & needing loads of grafts or worse....
Oh, take plenty of pics, as you may only do that big road trip once!
I did it 4 times in total, I rode the bike back in 95' via Laramie, Wyoming & IN, & rode another bike from Atl-San Antonio-Michigan-Ontario-NY State-Atl in 98'
Ride free,
Ross x.
I'm sorry to say to all the feMALES out there but, I do not find it sexy at all. It's almost the same as seeing a wanna-be on a bike with 1500 miles on it while wearing full brand new leathers in 80 decree weather. It MIGHT be acceptable it they could woop my a@# or if her girlfriend could.
Thanks for the compliment. I feel sexy riding my bike. I have heard that from several people that guys love a chick on her own bike. I have been riding since I was a teenager. I will never stop as long as I am able. It is my stress release. I see quite a few chicks on bikes in my neck of the woods anymore.
What a bonus to hear that people think women on bikes are sexy! I think I look like a boy on a bike but maybe I'm wrong.
I turned 40 in May and decided that 'sexy' had passed me by so I started learning to ride on my birthday instead. I've only done the CBT so far and am now getting a Suzuki GN125 on the road for lots of practice before my test.
I'm getting a bigger bike once I have my licence and will feel very proud to be handling it myself. After years on the back of mates (which I still love) I love the fact that I'm not looking over the top of the rider's helmet.

yes gals look damn sexy on bikes. so how many biker gals do we have in here.
Well I'm here! LOL
Although to add to someones comment about girls on bikes getting noticed...I rode mine in hotpants and thigh boots last year...don't think anyone noticed at all LOL. (Well, my mates behind me did...apparently LOL)
Women on bikes are very sexy. The way they have to sit for one is a turn on. They ( sportbike riders ) have to lean over. The arche in their back is a big turn on for me. Secondly, they are pioneers in a male dominated hobby.
By females riding, they break social and sexist barriers. They set the tone for generations of women behind them.
I love to see a female ride a motorcycle. I hope my two daughters ride when they are older.
Women on bikes are sexy!...My babe and I get tons of attention, some wanted and some NOT!..I ride Bitch, dont care if its on my Bitch seat or on the fender. As long as we can ride close and together then its allll good ;--).
Whats even more sexy?..A woman who can wrench her own. Nothing more powerful then not have to depend on someone else if something needs fixin. Its empowering in more wayz than one to watch women these days go after their passions without Ego!, and live the dream which is to ride free.
Peace,
JD
It is no different than handling men in any other situation, just be straight up. If they are respectful of me, I'll be respectful of them and not bruise their ego.
Be smart about where you ride. I'll go to bike nights, concerts, etc. alone - there are always tons of people I know there to watch my back. Going into an unknown hole in the wall type bar completely alone? That's asking for trouble whether or not you are on a bike or in a cage. Use your head - and of course don't drink and ride - DUM! A bunch of us have designated riders -LOL.
If we are gathering to bar hop, we designate someone in the group to watch and see how mcuh drinking is going on. We get people to stop well before they get on their bikes and we ride home with them, at least part way, to see how they are handling things, etc. etc. Found that when we started doing that we all had a lot more fun. No one got obnoxious,we can have a blast getting as sillly as we want, dancing, listening to great music - whatever and then we get home safely and feel good the next day so we can all go on a neat day trip.
Don't worry about it! THAT fear should have nothing to do with riding, that has to do with your man skills and a little common sense.
There is nothing like the road and 550 lbs of iron underneath!
I've been riding for awhile now and i think early on it was indeed more unusual to see a women on her own...these days there are thousnads of us...way to go girls*s
I can't explain it,it's quite simply in my blood...in my mind, nothing sexier than riding with my man....and on occasion, riding behind him too...
my two cents,
deb in NH
I agree!! I like riding along side a great guy - and though I don't get to very often, I really like riding two up behind a fella I feel close to.
Most of the miles I have ridden (about 15,000 total) were done solo and for a lot of them, it was just me, my bike and the road. I get a lot of thumbs up too, and have met so many great people riding. I had never been on a bike as a passenger before May of 2004, less than 3 years ago. Took one ride with a friend of a friend and it was all over. 2 weeks later I bought my first bike and took a course.
A year ago I bought my FatBoy, got it lowered a bunch and have had several options put on it, one being a SOLO seat:)
I've never looked back and in May I am planning on taking a 9 day tour out to Moab,NV through OK, TX, CO and down through NV, AZ and NM and back home to AR. If I can't get anyone to go along - I'm going solo. I think it will be a wonderful adventure.
Any advice from those who have done solo road trips before?
Not sure about out there Feminine, but I have found guys nothing but respectful...we are talking about other bikers here. It's the jerks in cars ya got to worry about!
feminineforsame,
You might be surprised how many women a woman on a bike will attract as well. I've had more women be impressed with me because I ride and a number of them have asked me for a ride. Unfortunately for them, not only am I straight but I don't have a back seat on my bike either so couldn't take them for a ride anyway. Besides attracting men or women isn't even remotely why I ride. I ride because I love to ride!!!
